Some, by definition. Your JPG is already lossy, and WebP re-compresses the pixels that were decoded from it, so this is a lossy-to-lossy conversion and the two encoders' artifacts stack. At a high quality setting the difference is invisible in normal viewing and the size saving is real. But this is not free shrinkage: if the source JPG was already squeezed hard, re-encoding it can look worse for very little gain. Convert one file and look at it before running the whole batch. Your originals are never modified, so you can always redo it at a higher setting.
