This free PNG to WebP converter turns PNG images into WebP right in your browser — in batches, with no upload, no signup and no watermark, and with the transparent background fully intact. PNG is lossless, which is exactly why the files are so heavy: a logo, a UI export or a cut-out product shot can run to several megabytes because every pixel is stored exactly as it was drawn. For a long time there was no good way out of that, because the obvious alternative — JPG — has no alpha channel and floods transparency with a solid color. WebP is the format that ends the trade-off: it has PNG's alpha channel and JPEG-class compression at the same time, so a transparent image commonly lands at half the size of the PNG or far less, with the background still transparent. Semi-transparent pixels come through too, so anti-aliased edges, soft drop shadows and faded gradients survive rather than turning into a jagged cut-out.

Drag the quality slider to decide how hard WebP compresses. WebP has a full alpha channel, so the transparent background survives — soft edges and drop shadows included. This is precisely what converting to JPG cannot do: JPG has no transparency at all, so it has to flood those pixels with a fill color and hand you a solid box behind your logo.

Nothing needs filling in, so there is no fill color anywhere in the process. That is the whole reason to send a transparent PNG to WebP rather than to JPG, which has no transparency at all and would replace it with a solid block of color.
